The
M. K. Nambyar SAARCLAW Centre at NALSAR was established for the development of legal objectives of SAARC. The legal field in SAARC was neglected for a long period and only a few fruitful developments
could take place in the SAARC region. The SAARCLAW Centre was established at NALSAR with an objective to undertake research projects on various aspects of interface of Law on issues concerning SAARC region.

| |
To foster the objectives of the SAARCLAW centre at NALSAR, most important of which is, to foster research in the legal arena of the SAARC region and find possible legal solutions to the problems faced by the in region especially the area of trade, NALSAR has offered a compulsory paper “Regional Trade Agreements: A Focus on SAARC” in the curriculum of LL.M. International Trade and Business Laws. |

| |
The paper focuses on the history and development of SAARC, various organs associated with it and their working. It also includes the successes and failures of SAARC as a Trading Bloc where the students do an in depth analysis of provisions of SAFTA and SAPTA. The study of various other blocs like EU, NAFTA, MERCOSUR, ASEAN, etc. has been included in the paper from where lessons can be taken for the development and growth of the SAARC. Besides this, the paper also discusses the achievement of SAARC such as the establishment of preferential/free trade agreements and also the bilateral trade agreement between India – Sri Lanka. |

| |
At the time when regionalism is at its peak and India being one of the fastest growing economies in the world, it is time for India to act accordingly and perform its part towards the development of the SAARC region. And NALSAR being one of the prestigious institutes of the country has a major role to play in this area. |
